Congratulations to Martha and her handler, Shirley Zindler, on winning the 2017 Petaluma Ugly Dog contest. Martha is a 125 pound Neapolitan Mastiff who calls nearby Sebastopol home when she isn’t strutting her stuff on the runway.
Martha’s chief qualifications are her droopy face, tremendous jowls, and window-rattling snore. She was a rescue, nearly blind from neglect but has regained her sight following several surgeries.
For her win of the annual competition, Martha will take home $1,500, a flashy trophy and a trip to New York for media appearances. I’m sure she would much rather have a soft pillow and a thick steak.
The Petaluma Ugliest Dog Contest has been an annual event since 1970 and draws entrants from all over the world. This year’s third place winner, Chase, a 14-year-old Chinese Crested-Harke mix, came all the way from Neath, United Kingdom .
